Local parent Andrew Cummins tells us about his son Thomas’ journey into cricket.
“Our son Thomas was first selected to represent Great Paxton Primary School while in Year 2 to play in the Kwik Fire 3s cricket tournament at Eaton Socon Cricket Club against other local primary schools. We were proud parents when he was selected, although neither of us had any experience of playing or watching cricket prior to this competition. It was clear Thomas was a natural at hitting the ball and showed enjoyment while taking part.
“During the competition we were given a flyer for All Stars Cricket. Thomas expressed an interest in giving this a go and broaden his skills and knowledge of the game. It was going to be a busy time for us as Thomas was already involved with a local football club and attending regular swimming lessons!
“Thomas joined All Stars Cricket at Eaton Socon CC. The sessions were excellently coached and gave all children the opportunity to learn the basic skills of bowling, batting and fielding and having loads of fun while taking part. He really enjoyed it and when the programme finished Thomas continued to enjoy the sport and attended the fun sessions with the club over the summer.
“He then attended trials at the end of the season and was successfully selected to join the club and attend winter training. Having furthered his skills and knowledge he was selected to join one of the Under 9 teams for the summer fixtures.
“Thomas played all the games, helping his newly formed team to become runners up in their league and was voted as best fielder of the season for his team.
“Thomas is now getting ready for his second season with the club and is thoroughly enjoying it. Hopefully he will go on to represent the school again at cricket if there is the opportunity.
“Had it not been for the school competition and All Stars Cricket, it is very unlikely that Thomas would have got involved with cricket and be part of the Cricket Club, and for us as a family to enjoy watching him excel in a different sport.”
