The second annual Malta seniors' cricket tournament at the Marsa Sports Club proved a hugely successful and enjoyable experience, despite some chilly conditions, with six county squads taking part in 30-over contests.
Bedfordshire had the oldest squad with no less than 4 over-70s players, and certainly the most inexperienced team and found themselves on the back of two very heavy defeats in the pool games against Yorkshire Ridings, the eventual winners of the tournament, and Sussex.
The final 5/6th place play-off against a joint Kent/Surrey side was much more competitive but Beds eventually lost with just 8 balls to spare. Limited bowling resources proved a big problem with Beds taking just 7 wickets over the three games and three of these taken by the team's oldest player, spinner Bernard Morse. Chris Rix from Ickwell won the Beds player of the tournament award with three victims behind the stumps and a top score of 34 against Yorkshire.
