Cricket fever is now in full swing across England and Wales in the lead up to the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup!
The tournament kicks off on 30 May with England starting their World Cup campaign against South Africa at The Oval.
What is the Cricket World Cup?
The Cricket World Cup is the international championship of one-day international (ODI) cricket and takes place every four years. The tournament first ran in 1975, meaning 2019 will be the 12th edition. It’s is a 50-over tournament with all 10 teams playing each other in a round-robin format, with the top four qualifying for the semi-finals. Australia are the current holders and are the most successful side having won the competition five times.
Who is competing?
England automatically qualified for the tournament as hosts. Australia, Bangladesh, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa & Sri Lanka qualified via their ODI ranking. Afghanistan and West Indies reached the 10-team competition through the qualifying tournament in Zimbabwe.
Where is it?
The tournament takes place at 11 grounds across England and Wales. Edgbaston (Birmingham), Bristol County Ground, Sophia Gardens (Cardiff), Chester-le-Street (Durham), Headingley (Leeds), Lord’s (London), The Oval (London), Old Trafford (Manchester), Trent Bridge (Nottingham), Rose Bowl (Southampton), County Ground (Taunton) will all host group matches. Old Trafford and Edgbaston will host semi-finals with Lord’s hosting the final.
When is it?
The competition runs from 30 May to 14 July. The group stage runs until 6 July with the two semi-finals on 9 July (Old Trafford, Manchester) and 11 July (Edgbaston, Birmingham).
The final takes place at Lord’s on 14 July.
