Despite a yellow weather warning for severe winds, over 500 people turned out to see the famous trophy at Peterborough Town Cricket Club on Saturday 27 April as part of the countdown to cricket’s showpiece tournament!
After four months of planning, Cricket East, in partnership with Peterborough Town Cricket Club, laid on a fantastic Family Fun Day of Cricket for the community to come and watch, have a go and spark excitement about this summer’s World Cup.
The youth cricket activity kicked off as we welcomed children from the Peterborough and Luton Wicketz programmes to play in 8-11 and 11-14 age group matches. Congratulations to Luton Wicketz for winning both matches.
Next up was an Under 9 Tournament with four local cricket clubs that have junior sections taking part – Peterborough Town, Orton Park, Newborough and Nassington. Congratulations to Nassington who won all three of their matches to become the CWC19 Peterborough U9 Tournament champions!
During the day we also ran All Stars Cricket Taster sessions for 5-8-year-olds.
The Northants Premier League match between Peterborough Town and Rushden played out with the home team earning a winning draw.
It was a high-profile day and we were delighted to be joined by Mayor of Peterborough Councillor Chris Ash, Councillor Bella Saltmarsh and Jaspal Singh, Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire.
Cricket East Club & Community Manager Will Sneath said: “It was a great day raising the profile of cricket in the City of Peterborough with a constant stream of people to have their photograph taken with the trophy and see what local recreational cricket is about.”
