Luton has been identified as one of 10 Core Cities - the only one in the region.
Funded by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), the programme aims to engage with and inspire South Asian communities in Luton to connect with cricket – both as players and as spectators.
Cricket East's Diverse Communities Officer Dave Summers is currently looking at the cricket facility landscape in Luton and engaging with local partners:
Parks Management of Luton Borough Council
Team Beds and Luton (County Sports Partnership)
ECB Regional Facilities - Jenni Jordan
IOG REgional Picth Adviser - Phil Jeggo
Portfolio holder for Community Cohesion - Councillor Aslam Khan
Dave recently visited 16 sites across Luton, including cricket grounds, parks and Luton Sixth Form College to review what the current cricket provision is and how it can be improved, with for example, non-turf pitches.
The sites visited included:
- Facility scoping at Lewsey Park non-turf pitch with fun fair on site with Luton Borough Parks Management staff and ECB Regional facilities representative (pictured above)
- New 2 square and non-turf pitch at Stockwood Park in feasibility stage
- Practice on non-turf pitch at Lutonians CC
- Cricket on grass at Kingsway Recreation Ground with the new enclosed Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) in background
- Chaul End MUGA with “Street” activity under the watchful eye of coach
