REPORT ON PETERBOROUGH WICKETZ COMPETITION DAY – SATURDAY 14TH DECEMBER 2024 AT BUSHFIELD SPORTS CENTRE:
Peterborough Wicketz and Luton Wicketz youngsters had a day to remember when they took part in an indoor tournament at Bushfield Sports Centre in Peterborough. The players had spent many weeks preparing themselves for this tournament with plenty of training sessions happening leading up to the event. Normal indoor ECB rules applied, with the matches being 6 players a side and batsman retiring at 25 before then recycling back in. Run scoring was the same as the popular adult Hunts Indoor League that takes place at the same venue on Sundays during the Winter and by many other indoor leagues around the country. The only difference was that the matches were 8 overs a side.
Both Peterborough and Luton had 2 teams each and after nearly 6 hours of competitive action it was Challney Chows who ended up victorious.
The day started with numerous warmups testing the strength and speed of the youngsters along with a reaction catching and throwing challenge before the matches started. The youngsters also had to work in their teams to help with communication and teamwork skills along with the added competitive edge of the matches. When not playing and resting in between matches the teams also had competitive challenges with the “Crazy Catch Challenge” and had a valuable lifestyle workshop on “Respect” which incorporates respecting each other, adults, parents and the community.
The matches were played on a round robin basis and ironically the last match that was on the schedule would be a winners take all match with both Challney Chows and Peterborough Pirates both having won 2 matches each. In the final match the Challney Chows posted 120-3 from their 8 overs. Due to an injury to a Peterborough Pirates player they were allowed to borrow another batsman from another team. A. Mahrwat came in and hit a brutal quickfire 38 but he was dismissed from the last ball of the day and the Chows were home winning by 4 runs. All the players from all 4 teams should be congratulated for their brilliant efforts and performance on the day with no one sure who was going to win until the last ball of the final match.
A very good event which has been run for the last 3 years and shows the growing links between Peterborough and Luton.
At the presentation a run down of all matches was announced praising the outstanding bowling performances from the day and the batsman who had retired. Under ECB rules batsman must retire at 25, but are allowed to recycle back in once other batters have retired or been dismissed.
At the presentation the following players received awards for their achievements during the day.
